Who Benefits?

by | Dec 27, 2012 | Articles

It is hard to believe, but at the moment the main beneficiaries of the Newtown massacre are gun retailers and body armor manufacturers.   With the threat of ceasing sales of weapons of mass killing, gun enthusiasts are purchasing all the weapons that may be banned and high capacity (30, 60 and 100 round) ammunition cartridges are flying off the shelves so fast that even manufacturers are sold out!

Now, it is well known that after each shooting tragedy guns sales multiply as people try to hoard whatever weapons they fear will soon be banned.  Now, we are adding a travesty to the tragedy with these gun and ammunition sales.  The problem we have with the gun laws and making them unattainable by mentally disturbed people is that in most instances the guns used in killings are legally obtain.  Furthermore, Adam Lanza did not purchase the weapons, his mother did.  He then used those weapons that belonged to her to carry out this massacre.

The chart above illustrates a disturbing trend.  While people are arguing over gun control laws because of graphics like this, there clearly is a larger environmental issue at play.  Societal shifts such as the acceptance of more violent acts in television, video games, and movies are part of the equation.  The medical community’s response to mental health issues of simply medicating, which can repress a person’s vitality and/or exacerbate violent behavior, is not working.  Families have difficulty staying together and instilling important values in their children.  The issue is much larger than simply having another government law on the books to require stricter purchasing of guns.  For now, the short-term impact is rampant fear spreading across the nation as people either stockpile weapons or feel the world is changing for the worse.  In realty, the future is quite bright and we live in extremely safe time from a historical standpoint; it’s a matter of shifting perspective.
